Manchester United is actively pursuing a move to sign Dutch forward Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna. The 23-year-old, who had a successful debut season in Serie A, played a crucial role in helping Bologna qualify for the Champions League for the first time in the club’s history. Zirkzee scored 11 goals in 34 Serie A games last season.
With Anthony Martial set to depart, United is seeking to bolster their attacking options to support their main centre-forward, Rasmus Hojlund. Zirkzee, described as “special” by Bologna manager Thiago Motta, has a release clause of €40 million (£33.7 million), which AC Milan is also reportedly willing to meet. Milan has already agreed on personal terms with Zirkzee, presenting strong competition for United.
Zirkzee recently cut short his holiday to join the Netherlands for their Euro 2024 campaign, where he was on the bench for their 2-1 win over Poland in their Group D opener.
In a recent interview, Zirkzee stated, “At the moment my head is only in Bologna. I will only do what makes sense in my heart.” Despite this, Manchester United’s interest is advanced, and they are in talks with his representatives.
United is also monitoring Lille’s Leny Yoro and Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite as potential additions to their defense, with Raphael Varane’s contract set to expire. After finishing eighth in the Premier League last season and winning the FA Cup, United aims to strengthen their squad significantly for the upcoming campaign under manager Erik ten Hag.
