Valeria Wasserman Chomsky, wife of renowned linguist Noam Chomsky, confirmed on Tuesday that reports of his death were untrue. Chomsky, 95, had been hospitalized in Sao Paulo, Brazil, recovering from a stroke suffered a year ago. The Beneficencia Portuguesa hospital stated he was discharged on Tuesday to continue treatment at home.
Earlier in the day, false reports of Chomsky’s death circulated widely, prompting corrections from publications like Jacobin and The New Statesman, which initially published obituaries but later revised their headlines or removed articles altogether.
Chomsky, known globally for his linguistic theories and activism critiquing U.S. foreign policy, has resided in Brazil with his wife since 2015. He taught at MIT for decades before joining the University of Arizona in 2017.
The clarification came after Brazilian newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo reported his recent hospitalization due to lingering effects from the stroke, affecting his speech and movement on the right side.
