France captain Kylian Mbappe broke his nose during France’s 1-0 Euro 2024 win over Austria on Monday, the French Football Federation (FFF) confirmed.
The injury occurred in the second half when Mbappe’s face collided with Austria’s Kevin Danso’s shoulder during a header attempt. Despite the injury, the FFF announced that Mbappe will not require surgery. Instead, he will receive treatment and be fitted with a protective mask to prepare for his return to the competition.
The FFF’s statement read: “Kylian Mbappé suffered a broken nose during the second part of the Austria-France match held this Monday in Düsseldorf. The captain of France was treated first by the medical staff and Dr. Franck Le Gall, who diagnosed him with a nose fracture. Mbappé will receive treatment in the next few days, but he will not undergo surgery in the immediate future. A mask will be made for him so that the number 10 of the French national team can prepare for his return to the competition after a period dedicated to treatment.”
FFF President Philippe Diallo provided further updates, emphasizing the swift response by the medical team to minimize the effects of the fracture and ensure Mbappe could remain in the tournament. “There were some medical exams done on-site to know more about the status of Kylian Mbappé’s nose, and they made some conclusions pretty quickly. They tried to reduce the aftermath of his fracture, for him to be able to stay in the tournament. As I said, there is no surgery planned for the moment. We’ll wait until the end of the day to see how things develop.”
Mbappe, who is also expected to play for Real Madrid in the upcoming season, humorously addressed his injury on social media, posting “Any ideas for masks?” on X (formerly Twitter). His return to play will depend on how he feels with the mask, as a broken nose can take weeks to heal fully.
France aims to have Mbappe back on the field soon, continuing their bid to win a record-equalling third European Championship.
