Finidi George has resigned from his position as head coach of Nigeria’s senior men’s national team. The decision came after the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) announced plans to hire a foreign technical advisor. George’s resignation was confirmed by former Eagles media officer, Toyin Ibitoye, on his X account.
George was appointed as the official head coach on April 29, 2024, after serving on an interim basis since March. During his short tenure, Nigeria played two competitive fixtures in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, drawing 1-1 with South Africa and losing 2-1 to Benin. The Super Eagles are yet to win a match in Group C and are currently four points behind co-leaders Rwanda, South Africa, and Benin.
In his resignation letter, Finidi expressed his willingness to stay on despite the team’s poor performance, stating his confidence in being able to turn things around. However, the NFF’s decision to bring in a foreign technical advisor signaled a lack of confidence in his leadership, which ultimately led to his resignation.
Finidi thanked the NFF, the sports ministry, and the Nigerian people for the opportunity to serve as head coach. He assured his continued support for the team and expressed his hope for their future success.
A former decorated player, Finidi was part of Nigeria’s ‘Golden Generation’ that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and made a memorable debut at the 1994 FIFA World Cup. He earned 62 caps for Nigeria and participated in the 1994 and 1998 World Cups. Before his national team appointment, Finidi managed Enyimba International, leading them to the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) title in his second season.
