Jerry West, the iconic basketball player whose silhouette inspired the NBA logo, passed away peacefully at the age of 86, with his wife, Karen, by his side. The news was announced by the Los Angeles Clippers, where West had served as an executive board member and consultant since 2017.
West was a legendary figure in basketball, known for his remarkable career with the Los Angeles Lakers. He featured in nine NBA Finals, securing a title in 1972, and was an NBA All-Star for all 14 seasons of his playing career. His silhouette dribbling a basketball became the iconic NBA logo, earning him the nickname “the Logo.”
An Olympic gold medalist at the 1960 Rome Games, West was a pivotal player for the USA team. His ability to make crucial plays in important moments earned him another nickname, “Mr. Clutch.”
After retiring as a player in 1974, West transitioned into coaching and management. As an executive, he played a key role in building the Lakers’ “Showtime” era, contributing to five titles in the 1980s. He also signed Shaquille O’Neal and drafted Kobe Bryant, laying the foundation for future Lakers’ successes.
West’s influence extended beyond the Lakers. He held executive roles with the Memphis Grizzlies, Golden State Warriors, and Los Angeles Clippers, contributing significantly to each team’s success.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and the Basketball Hall of Fame praised West for his profound impact on the game and his character and integrity. Tributes poured in from across the basketball community, celebrating West’s legacy and his contributions to the sport.
