A military plane carrying Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Chilima and nine others has gone missing. The aircraft departed from Lilongwe on Monday morning and was scheduled to land at Mzuzu International Airport, about 370 kilometers to the north, but failed to arrive.
Aviation authorities lost contact with the plane shortly after it took off, and all efforts to reestablish communication have been unsuccessful. President Lazarus Chakwera has canceled his trip to the Bahamas and ordered an immediate search and rescue operation. The public will be informed of any developments as they occur.
Vice President Chilima was on his way to attend the burial of former cabinet minister Ralph Kasambara. Prior to his political career, Chilima held key leadership roles at multinational companies like Unilever and Coca-Cola.
