Nigerian actress Yvonne Jegede recently opened up about the reasons behind her divorce from fellow actor Olakunle Abounce Fawole. The couple, who married in 2017, split just a year later. They share a son named Xavier.
In a snippet from the Honest Bunch podcast, Jegede revealed that her decision to leave the marriage was primarily due to financial imbalances. She stated that she was contributing more financially than Fawole, which created strain in their relationship.
“He is eight years older than me, but once we got married, he started taking my jokes as disrespect,” Jegede explained. “The main reason I left the marriage was because I was bringing in more money. It’s not easy taking care of my son alone. I would have chosen money over love.”
Jegede also discussed the emotional and financial burdens she faced during her marriage. She single-handedly went to the United States to give birth to their child and decided to include both her surname and Fawole’s in their son’s name due to her significant contributions.
Despite their separation, Jegede described her ex-husband as having a kind heart and acknowledged that their issues, although significant, were not insurmountable. However, the marriage ultimately ended.
Yvonne Jegede gained fame for her role in the film ‘Missing Angel’ in 2004 and has since starred in numerous Nollywood movies, including ‘Blackberry Babes’, ‘Okafor’s Law’, and ‘Gangs of Lagos’. She also appeared in 2Face Idibia’s iconic music video ‘African Queen’.
