The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has discovered 122 illegal oil refining sites across the Niger Delta region over the past week.
In a documentary released on Tuesday, May 28, NNPC revealed that 65 illegal pipeline connections were detected and removed in Rivers and other states within the Niger Delta.
The illegal refineries were found in locations such as Tomble II, III, IV, and Umuajuloke in Rivers State, and Oporomor III, Eduwini, and Ajatiton in Bayelsa State.
Additionally, vandalized wellheads were discovered in Tomble IV, Rivers, and Egbema in Imo State. A pit filled with crude oil from a damaged wellhead was also found.
NNPC identified five illegal storage sites where oil was stored in sacks, pits, cans, and a filling station. They seized 20 vehicles, including a tanker, in Delta and Imo states, and confiscated 29 boats transporting crude oil or illegally refined products across creeks in Bayelsa and Delta states.
In connection with these incidents, 33 suspects have been arrested.
A filling station was also sealed for selling illegally refined fuel to motorist in Akwa Ibom State. The filling station selling illegally refined fuel was uncovered at Grey Creek in Akwa Ibom State.
