Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, a prominent social media critic and activist, has been released from police detention after spending nine days in custody.
His detention, which sparked widespread concern and outcry among his followers and fellow activists, raised significant questions about freedom of speech and online expression in Nigeria.
VeryDarkMan’s arrest stemmed from multiple petitions and allegations of cyberstalking brought against him, though specific details regarding these claims remain undisclosed.
The release of VeryDarkMan was confirmed by prominent activists such as Omoyele Sowore, the convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, and Deji Adeyanju, a human rights activist. Adeyanju expressed gratitude to everyone involved in securing VeryDarkMan’s release, including Sowore, Kefiano, and VeryDarkMan’s legal team.
This marks the second time this year that VeryDarkMan has faced police detention. In January, he was reportedly arrested following a petition by actress Tonto Dikeh, highlighting the challenges faced by critics and activists advocating for freedom of expression in Nigeria.
