Nigeria experienced another national grid collapse on Thursday, plunging the country into darkness. The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company and the Eko Electricity Distribution Company confirmed the collapse, which occurred around 4:30 pm. This marks the fourth grid collapse in 2024, coinciding with the Easter holidays.
The collapse resulted in power outages across various areas, including Apo, Dawaki, and Utako. Millions of homes and businesses were affected, as major power generation plants remained inactive. The Azura Power Plant was the only facility contributing to the grid, but with a limited output of 54 megawatts.
This incident adds to the challenges faced by Nigeria’s power sector, which has been plagued by frequent grid collapses. The situation has worsened since January 2024, with 46 collapses recorded between 2017 and 2023. Despite efforts to address these issues, the country continues to grapple with electricity deficits and widespread blackouts.
