Cillian Murphy, fresh off his Oscar win for his portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer in “Oppenheimer,” is gearing up for another biopic venture with Universal Pictures. This time, he’s set to produce and star in an adaptation of Mark A. Bradley’s book “Blood Runs Coal: The Yablonski Murders and the Battle for the United Mine Workers of America.”
The film will delve into the chilling true crime saga of Joseph ‘Chip’ Yablonski, an American attorney whose father, a coal miner and trade union leader, was brutally murdered by a rival in 1969. Yablonski’s relentless pursuit of justice in the face of corruption within the United Mine Workers forms the heart of this gripping narrative.
Penned by the talented Butterworth brothers, Jez and John-Henry, known for their work on “Ford v Ferrari” and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” the script promises to bring this compelling story to life on the big screen.
Murphy, known for his versatility in period pieces, will step into the shoes of Chip Yablonski, portraying his journey from the tragic loss of his family to his unwavering quest for accountability.
This project marks Murphy’s continued collaboration with Universal Pictures following the success of “Oppenheimer.” Additionally, Murphy’s involvement as a producer reflects his growing influence in the industry.
As production gears up for “Blood Runs Coal,” Murphy’s packed schedule also includes his role as the head teacher grappling with mental health issues in the Netflix film “Steve,” and his much-anticipated return as Tommy Shelby in the upcoming “Peaky Blinders” film.
With Murphy at the helm, “Blood Runs Coal” promises to captivate audiences with its riveting portrayal of one of the most notorious crimes in the history of American trade unions.
