The Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) has confirmed the escape of Nadeem Anjarwalla, a top Binance executive, from custody. Anjarwalla, who holds British and Kenyan nationalities, was detained in Nigeria on charges related to money laundering and terrorism financing transactions linked to the Binance currency exchange platform.
Anjarwalla, along with his colleague, Tigran Gambaryan, faced legal actions upon their arrival in Nigeria in February. Anjarwalla escaped custody on March 22, despite being under a 14-day remand order by a Nigerian court. ONSA disclosed that he fled using a smuggled passport.
The Nigerian security agencies, in collaboration with Interpol, have launched a manhunt for Anjarwalla. Additionally, personnel responsible for his custody have been apprehended, and investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances leading to his escape.
The case against Anjarwalla and Gambaryan involves allegations of tax evasion and other charges. They were detained following a broader clampdown on crypto platforms in Nigeria. The Federal Government of Nigeria has been investigating illegal transactions on the Binance platform and has demanded retribution of at least $10 billion from Binance for profiting from these activities.
Anjarwalla’s escape has raised concerns and prompted calls for assistance from the Nigerian public and the international community to help law enforcement agencies in his apprehension.
