Tragedy struck Abia State University Uturu (ABSU) as three medical students lost their lives in a fatal car accident. The unfortunate incident occurred on Thursday evening along the Nunya axis of the Enugu Port Harcourt Expressway, less than an hour after they attended the induction ceremony for their senior colleagues.
The three students, two in their 500 level and one in 400 level, were on their way back to Aba when the accident happened. Two other passengers sustained injuries and were promptly taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Umuahia for treatment. Fortunately, they have since been treated and discharged.
Mr. Chijioke Nwogu, the Public Relations Officer of ABSU, confirmed the tragic incident, while Dr. Ngozi Okoronkwo, the state Commissioner for Health, described it as deeply saddening.
She said she had visited the hospital to see the injured students. She also confirmed that they had been treated and discharged as their injuries were said not to be too serious.
On how the accident happened, the Abia commissioner said she was told that the students were driving a Toyota Camry when a tyre burst. The driver probably lost control and hit a tree by the road side.
Two of the casualties were said to have died on the spot. The third died few minutes after they were brought to the hospital.
