The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the death of Gift Okpara, popularly known as 2Baba, a notorious cult leader allegedly involved in the murder of former Ahoada Divisional Police Officer, Bako Angbashim.
2Baba was reportedly killed during a joint security operation in Idu-Ekpeye community, Ahoada East LGA. He was accused of orchestrating the murder of Angbashim, whose body was dismembered by 2Baba and his gang in September 2023.
Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, had offered a N100 million bounty for information leading to the capture of 2Baba and his gang.
The police command, under the leadership of Commissioner Olatunji Disu, conducted extensive operations to apprehend those responsible for the DPO’s killing. Over 70 suspects linked to the murder were arrested and prosecuted, but 2Baba and his gang managed to evade capture, retreating into the forest.
Despite the challenging terrain, security forces continued surveillance, leading to an aerial assault executed by the Air Force on February 10, 2024, causing significant casualties to 2Baba’s gang and destroying their camp. However, 2Baba managed to relocate.
On February 17, 2024, 2Baba and his gang attacked Okogbe town and Odiokwu community, damaging pipelines. Subsequently, security operatives raided 2Baba’s new camp, resulting in a fierce gun battle. Although 2Baba and his gang initially escaped, intelligence later confirmed 2Baba’s death after he lost consciousness and resuscitation attempts failed.
Efforts are underway to retrieve 2Baba’s body, and investigations into the activities of the Iceland cult in the region continue.
Items recovered from the camp include firearms, ammunition, explosives, army camouflage, assorted charms, a human skull, and other incriminating materials.
The Rivers State Police Command reaffirms its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of citizens and vows to employ all necessary resources and strategies to maintain a secure environment.
