Dennis Idahosa, a member of the House of Representatives, has emerged as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the upcoming Edo State Governorship election.
Following the party’s primary election held in Benin City, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, who chaired the Edo State Governorship Primary Election Committee, declared Idahosa as the APC flagbearer. Idahosa secured over 40,000 votes, defeating other contestants and earning the opportunity to represent APC in the September 2024 governorship poll.
Expressing his gratitude, Idahosa dedicated the victory to God and the party supporters. He emphasized the need for reconciliation among party members, acknowledging them as one family despite contesting against each other.
However, the primary election was not without its challenges. Suspected thugs disrupted the collation exercise initially, leading to a change in venue. Despite this disruption, Governor Uzodimma clarified that Idahosa’s victory was declared in the correct venue.
In response to the declaration, the APC State Returning Officer, Ogbuaja Stanley Uzoamaka, announced Senator Monday Okpebholo as the APC flagbearer. This led to some confusion, with Okpebholo’s group contesting Uzodimma’s declaration. Nonetheless, the ruling APC affirmed that only the Governor Hope Uzodinma-Led Edo State APC Governorship Primary Election Committee had the authority to announce the results.
The primary election, which witnessed the withdrawal of Osagie Ize-Iyamu, a notable APC member, before the exercise, was described as peaceful by some members of the party in Oredo Local Government Area.
With Dennis Idahosa’s emergence as the APC governorship candidate, the party gears up for the September 21 governorship election in Edo State.
