Presiding Justice Joseph Shagbaor Ikyegh of the Port Harcourt Division of the Court of Appeal has passed away. The distinguished jurist reportedly collapsed at his residence following a phone conversation.
Born on March 17, 1958, in Konshisha LGA of Benue State, Justice Ikyegh was called to the Nigerian bar in 1980 after studying at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife). He served as a Judge of the High Court of Benue State from March 27, 1991, until his elevation to the Court of Appeal on July 16, 2010.
Notably, he was a member of the 2019 Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal that upheld the election of ex-President Muhammadu Buhari by dismissing the petition of Atiku Abubakar and the PDP.
He also chaired the panel that granted the applications of the LP and PDP to inspect the BVAS machines and other electoral documents immediately after the 2023 General Election.
Less than 2 weeks ago, he read the majority judgement re-affirming Dapo Abiodun as Ogun State Governor.
He was initially amongst the 22-man list scheduled to be interviewed for promotion to the Apex Court.
He is ranked 10th in the Seniority list of the Appellate Court.
He left behind a rich legacy of legal jurisprudence and public service spanning over three decades. He is survived by a wife, children & grandchildren.
