The Nigerian Super Eagles team stands to receive a whopping $7 million (around N8.9 billion) if they emerge victorious in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.
The Super Eagles secured their spot in the final of the 34th edition of AFCON by defeating South Africa in a thrilling match that ended 1-1 after 120 minutes of play, with Nigeria triumphing in the penalty shootout.
Just for reaching the final tournament, the Eagles have already guaranteed themselves $4 million.
Earlier, Dr. Patrice Motsepe, the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), announced a 40 percent increase in prize money before the tournament commenced.
According to a statement released on the football governing body’s website on January 4, the winning team of the tournament will receive $7 million, which is $2 million more than the prize money awarded at the last edition held in Cameroon.
In addition to the increased winnings for the champions, the runners-up of the African showpiece event will now receive $4 million (approximately N5 billion). The losing semi-finalists, South Africa and DR Congo, will each take home $2.5 million, while the four quarter-finalists will receive $1.3 million each.
“CAF has made significant progress over the past two years in increasing the prize money of the AFCON and all its other major competitions,” Motsepe said.
“We have increased the prize money of the AFCON winner to USD 7 000 000 which is a 40% increase from the previous AFCON prize money.
“I am confident that a portion of the prize money will contribute to developing football and also benefit all the football stakeholders, as well as assist our Member Associations with their administrations,” he added.
