Chiamaka Ifezue has been sentenced to death by hanging for the murder of 27-year-old makeup artist Ijeoma Nneke. The Enugu State High Court, led by Honourable Justice Kenneth Okpe, delivered the verdict on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, after a two-hour judgment.
Ifezue was found guilty of forcing Nneke to drink a poisonous substance, resulting in her death. Nneke went missing on November 11, 2020, after leaving home for a job. Her mutilated corpse was discovered around Maryland in Enugu metropolis on November 16.
Ifezue and her brother, Chukwuemeka, were arrested and charged with conspiracy and murder. However, Chukwuemeka was discharged during the trial due to insufficient evidence implicating him in the crime.
Justice Okpe ruled that the prosecution had proven Ifezue’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The court agreed with the prosecution’s arguments, leading to Ifezue’s conviction for murder and subsequent sentencing to death by hanging.
During the trial, police exhibits, including money, mobile phones, and makeup tools belonging to the deceased, were presented as evidence. Sgt. Udeze Oguguo, a police officer, testified about the recovery of these exhibits from the scene of the crime.
Additionally, WhatsApp messages and text messages exchanged by the deceased with her fiancé and a friend at the scene of the crime were submitted as evidence. The key of a Toyota Metrix car allegedly used to transport the deceased’s body was also presented.
Despite challenges with moving the car to the court due to its condition, the evidence presented during the trial contributed to the conviction of Ifezue for the murder of Ijeoma Nneke.
