At the 66th Grammy Awards, Nigerian Afrobeats stars, including Burna Boy, Davido, Tems, Ayra Starr, Olamide, and Asake, faced disappointment as they lost in all 10 nominations across five categories. The inaugural ‘Best African Music Performance’ award went to South African singer Tyla for her 2023 track, “Water.”
The disappointment extended to categories announced at the Grammy Premiere ceremony. Burna Boy and Davido lost the Best Global Album category to Shakti, and the Best Global Music Performance category to Indian composer Zakir Hussain. Lil Durk’s collaboration with J Cole, “All My Life,” claimed the Grammy for Best Melodic Rap, leaving Burna Boy without a trophy despite four nominations.
Tems, last year’s Grammy winner, lost in the Song Written for Visual Media category for her work on the Black Panther theme song. Davido, with three nominations, faced a similar fate, missing out on awards in Best Global Music Performance, Best Global Music Album, and Best African Music Performance categories.
Despite expressing optimism, Davido and other Nigerian artists, including Burna Boy, Olamide, Ayra Starr, and Asake, couldn’t secure wins. Meanwhile, Tyla’s victory in the Best Global Music Performance category marked her first Grammy win for the hit song “Water.”
The Grammy ceremony saw various winners, including Chris Stapleton for Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance, and Killer Mike, who scored awards for Best Rap Song, Best Rap Performance, and Best Rap Album.
