Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro, defended Zaidu Sanusi following Nigeria’s 1-0 triumph over Angola in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarterfinal. Despite criticism over Sanusi’s performance, Peseiro praised the left-back’s efforts in adapting to the team’s system.
In the post-match conference, Peseiro acknowledged the challenges faced by Sanusi, who has been a consistent presence in the Super Eagles’ lineup. The FC Porto defender has received scrutiny for his contributions, especially in the quarterfinal clash where fans noted missed opportunities and less precise deliveries.
“It’s not easy playing fullback in this system; they must go and come in speed. Zaidu, I think, played better in this match than the last match, but I know he made one or two mistakes,” remarked Peseiro, addressing Sanusi’s adjustment to the wing-back role.
Peseiro emphasized the collective effort of the entire team, expressing satisfaction with their performance. Despite individual scrutiny, he commended all players and stated, “All my players played well. I’m very happy with them, and they deserve praises.” Overall, Peseiro defended Sanusi’s contribution to the team, highlighting the challenges of adapting to a different tactical role in the ongoing AFCON 2023.
