In an intense Group F clash at the Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco and DR Congo played to a 1-1 draw, maintaining their unbeaten status in the tournament. Achraf Hakimi’s early goal for Morocco was answered by Silas Katompa Mvumpa’s late equalizer, earning DR Congo a well-deserved point.
Morocco, considered favorites after reaching the World Cup semi-finals in 2022, took the lead in the 6th minute with Hakimi’s header from a Hakim Ziyech corner. Despite their early advantage, Morocco faced a resilient DR Congo side that created problems throughout the match.
DR Congo missed an opportunity to level the score in the first half when Cedric Bakambu’s penalty struck the post, awarded after a VAR review for a handling offense by Selim Amallah. However, the underdogs showcased determination, and their persistence paid off in the 77th minute when Silas, coming off the bench, neatly finished a chance created by Meschack Elia.
With this result, Morocco tops Group F with four points from two games, following their 3-0 win over Tanzania in the tournament opener. DR Congo, having drawn 1-1 with Zambia in their first match, now has two points. Morocco will face Zambia in their next game, aiming to secure the group’s top spot, while DR Congo remains in contention for a last-16 spot as they prepare to face Tanzania in their final group match.
The match highlighted the tough challenge Morocco faces in their quest for the AFCON title, with DR Congo proving to be formidable opponents. Silas Katompa Mvumpa, the VfB Stuttgart forward, was awarded Player of the Match for his impactful performance, rescuing a point for his team with a crucial late goal.
