Former Sierra Leone President, Ernest Bai Koroma, facing charges of treason related to an alleged coup attempt, has landed in Nigeria for medical care. Koroma, who served as president from 2007 to 2018, flew from Freetown to Abuja on Friday.
The move follows an agreement between the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio, allowing Koroma temporary relocation for medical reasons. The court granted him up to three months in Nigeria, describing the decision as a “humanitarian gesture.” Koroma’s charges stem from an alleged coup attempt in November 2023.
