In a recent development in Anambra State, three traditional rulers, namely Igwe F.E. Ebelendu of Aguluezechukwu, Igwe Onwuamaeze Damian Ezeani of Neni, and Igwe Gerald Obunadike Mbamalu of Ojoto, have collectively revoked the chieftaincy titles they had conferred on Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, the representative for Anambra South.
The withdrawal comes after the Anambra State government, acting through the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Community Affairs, suspended Igwe Damian Ezeani for violating the code of conduct for traditional rulers by conferring a chieftaincy title on Senator Ubah.
In an official statement by Christian Aburime, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, it was revealed that the traditional rulers had apologized to the state government, acknowledging their actions were in direct contravention of the State Traditional Rulers’ code. The titles of Ikemba Ojoto, Odenjiinji Neni, and Dike Eji Eje Ogu previously bestowed upon Senator Ifeanyi Ubah have been officially withdrawn and declared null and void.
This decision is a response to the breach of traditional laws outlined in the State Traditional Rulers’ code, emphasizing the importance of adherence by traditional rulers to avoid actions contrary to the law.
Senator Ubah, who recently switched to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and is rumored to be eyeing the 2025 governorship election in the state, had earlier criticized the state government for suspending the traditional ruler of Neni, who had bestowed upon him the title of ‘Odenjinji’ during the Yuletide festivities.
The political undertones in this situation are evident, with Ubah stating that the entire situation revolves around politics. As the saga unfolds, it adds a layer of complexity to the political landscape in Anambra, potentially influencing the upcoming elections and relationships between traditional institutions and political figures.
