The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) has cautioned residents against buying fried plantains, commonly known as “Plantain Chips,” due to concerns about unhygienic practices during processing and frying for sale. The advisory follows a viral online image showing a plantain chips seller allegedly adding polythene (“rubber”) to the hot vegetable oil used for frying.
LASCOPA expressed deep concern about the potential health risks posed by such practices. In response to the alarming discovery, the agency urged consumers to exercise caution and be vigilant about where they purchase plantain chips to avoid unknowingly exposing themselves to harmful substances or preventable food poisoning.
The agency assured the public that it is actively investigating the reported incident and is committed to taking appropriate actions to protect consumers and hold accountable those responsible for unsafe processing practices.
LASCOPA emphasized the importance of public involvement in reporting any unfriendly or unlawful practices among sellers of consumable items. Residents are encouraged to promptly notify relevant government agencies, including LASCOPA, about activities that could jeopardize consumer health.
Residents can reach out to LASCOPA at its office in Ikeja or annex branches in Badagry, Bariga, Ikorodu, and Ikoyi-Obalende. They can also contact the agency via email at [email protected] or [email protected] or through phone numbers: 08124993885, 09064323154, and 08092509777.
