Trevor Noah, former host of The Daily Show, is celebrating a groundbreaking Emmy win for Outstanding Variety Series. The show’s victory marks the first time it has claimed the award since Jon Stewart’s tenure as host.
Noah expressed his joy on social media, sharing a clip of the Emmy win on Instagram and extending gratitude to his team. The Daily Show’s triumph also earned Noah the distinction of being the first Black person to win an Emmy for outstanding talk series.
In his Instagram caption, Noah acknowledged the honor and thanked the Television Academy. The comedian recognized fellow nominees, including Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers, Stephen Colbert, and Jon Stewart, expressing camaraderie in the competitive category.
The Los Angeles Times reported Noah’s historic win, emphasizing that he is the first Black person to secure an Emmy in the outstanding talk series category. Noah acknowledged this achievement on MLK day, calling it a tremendous honor.
Notably, Noah thanked The Daily Show’s director, David Paul Meyer, and received congratulations from South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. The president commended Noah’s achievement, highlighting his contribution to the global stage.
During his Emmy acceptance speech, Noah reflected on the show’s journey and credited Jon Stewart, the previous host, as a “crazy genius” who invited him to join the show. Noah humorously referenced ‘beating’ John Oliver’s show and expressed his love for Oliver.
This victory marks Noah’s second Emmy, with The Daily Show previously winning for outstanding short-form variety series in 2017. Although Noah departed from The Daily Show in 2022, his legacy continues with this historic win.
