In anticipation of the 54th Convocation ceremony at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), postgraduate students caused a disturbance on Tuesday by vandalizing a bus carrying convocation gowns and making away with them. The incident arose from the university’s failure to promptly distribute gowns to the over 6,000 Master’s degree graduands, despite many having paid the required fees.
The Dean of the Postgraduate College, Mr Osinubi, revealed that arrangements were made for gown distribution, but delays occurred, leading to frustration among waiting students. In an attempt to ensure fairness, the dean proposed a balloting system, but before arrangements could be finalized, some students resorted to breaking into the parked bus, leaving it vandalized.
The university responded by sending messages to graduands, suspending gown distribution and assuring refunds for those who had paid but couldn’t obtain gowns. The situation sparked public outrage, with affected students expressing frustration on social media.
UNILAG’s management reported the incident as an attack by unidentified hoodlums, emphasizing that it was an isolated incident related to crowd control during gown distribution. The university is currently investigating the incident to identify those responsible and prevent a recurrence.
The disruption has raised concerns about the criteria for final clearance and the return of gown fees, leaving graduands uncertain about the convocation process. UNILAG management has urged stakeholders to disregard misinformation surrounding the incident.
