An explosion in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, resulted in two deaths and 77 injuries, according to Governor Seyi Makinde. The incident, occurring on Tuesday evening, was caused by explosives stored by illegal miners in a house in the Bodija area of the city.
Governor Makinde, who visited the scene, assured comprehensive search and rescue operations throughout the night. Emergency services, ambulances, and security personnel were deployed, with medical bills for victims to be covered by the government. Temporary accommodation and support for rebuilding damaged homes were also promised.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the explosives were stored by illegal miners, and the governor emphasized that those responsible would face legal consequences. Residents were urged to call 615 for emergencies and stay clear of the scene.
The incident, which shook multiple areas within a 15km stretch, affected neighborhoods such as Ologuneru, Apete, New Garage, Bashorun, Akobo, Sango, and Eleyele. Videos on social media showed the widespread impact, with houses and cars far from the explosion site also damaged.
