AS Roma has officially parted ways with head coach Jose Mourinho after a disappointing run of results, winning only one of their last six Serie A games and sitting ninth in the league. The decision comes after their recent elimination from the Coppa Italia by city rivals Lazio and Mourinho’s sending off during the match.
Mourinho, who took charge of Roma in 2021, led the team to victory in the Europa Conference League in 2022 and reached the Europa League final last season. However, the Giallorossi’s current position, 22 points behind league leaders Inter Milan, prompted the owners, Dan and Ryan Friedkin, to make a calculated decision for an immediate change.
Former Roma captain Daniele De Rossi is set to step into Mourinho’s shoes, with an agreement in place. De Rossi is expected to lead the team until June, with the possibility of contract renewal based on performance.
The owners considered other candidates, including former Brighton and Chelsea boss Graham Potter and Antonio Conte. The decision to part ways with Mourinho was not abrupt; the ownership believed it was the right moment for a change, considering the overall season performance.
In a statement, Roma expressed gratitude to Mourinho for his passion and efforts, acknowledging the need for an immediate shift in the club’s direction. The decision was communicated to Mourinho during a meeting at the Trigoria training ground, leading to the cancellation of the day’s training session.
Mourinho’s departure marks the end of his three-year tenure at Roma, highlighted by winning the Europa Conference League but marred by recent struggles, culminating in the defeat to AC Milan. The owners thanked Mourinho for his contributions and wished him and his assistants the best in their future endeavors.
