In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court has affirmed Governor Dauda Lawal-Dare’s (PDP) victory in the Zamfara State Governorship election held on March 18th.
Initially, the tribunal had unanimously supported INEC’s declaration of Lawal-Dare as the elected governor, dismissing APC’s Bello Matawalle’s petition. However, the lead judgment delivered by Justice Sybil Nwaka-Gbagi JCA of the Appeal Court ordered a re-run election in several wards across three local government areas.
Unsatisfied with this decision, Gov Lawal-Dare took the matter to the Apex Court, seeking to overturn the Appeal Court’s judgment.
Justice Agim JSC, delivering the verdict, stated, “The Court of Appeal’s decision lacks evidential foundation. The November judgment of the Court of Appeal is set aside, along with the order nullifying the appellant’s election. The election of the appellant is upheld.” This brings an end to the legal dispute, solidifying Governor Lawal-Dare’s position.
