Tottenham Hotspur has secured a loan deal with RB Leipzig to bring former Chelsea forward Timo Werner to London until the end of the season. The 27-year-old, who had been linked with a potential move to Manchester United, will join Spurs on loan with an option for a permanent transfer at the season’s conclusion.
The deal involves Tottenham covering Werner’s full salary for the remainder of the campaign. If Spurs decide to make the move permanent, the reported fee stands at £15.5 million. Werner’s return to London is imminent, addressing Spurs’ need for additional firepower, especially with captain Heung-Min Son absent for the Asia Cup and concerns about Alejo Veliz’s knee injury.
Werner, who scored 23 goals in 89 appearances during his time at Chelsea, rejoined RB Leipzig in 2022. His recent Bundesliga stint includes two goals in eight appearances this season. The German forward’s contract with Leipzig extends until the summer of 2026.
RB Leipzig confirmed Werner’s exclusion from their friendly against St Gallen as he engages in talks with his new club. The move aligns with Werner’s desire for a loan to enhance his chances of participating in the European Championship.
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou welcomes Werner’s addition to the squad, providing valuable attacking options. Werner’s experience in the Premier League, including winning the Champions League with Chelsea, makes him a notable asset for Spurs.
Marco Rose, RB Leipzig’s manager, acknowledged Werner’s wish for a loan move and expressed support for his ambitions. Werner’s return to London not only bolsters Tottenham’s attack but also aligns with the player’s aspirations, including a potential return to international duty with Germany.
Tottenham, currently dealing with the absence of key players, aims to reinforce its attacking lineup with Werner’s arrival. The German forward’s medical and finalization of the loan deal are expected before Spurs’ Premier League clash with Manchester United on January 14.
