In a surprising move, Republican Representative Lauren Boebert, currently representing a significant portion of western and southern Colorado, revealed her plan to switch districts in the 2024 election. Boebert, known for her far-right stance, made the announcement through a Facebook video.
Boebert expressed her intention to seek office in Colorado’s 4th Congressional District, covering the Eastern Plains, currently represented by Republican U.S. Rep. Ken Buck. Buck, who declared he won’t seek reelection in 2024, cited the Republican Party’s support of former President Donald Trump and the embrace of conspiracy theories.
In her Facebook video, Boebert thanked her constituents and supporters while emphasizing the importance of maintaining a conservative voice for Colorado in Congress. She pledged to represent the 3rd District effectively until the end of her current term and work towards earning the trust of grassroots conservative voters in the 4th District for the 2025 term.
Boebert’s current district, Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District, encompasses the northwest corner of the state, extending south through Grand Junction, east to Pueblo, and the southern central part of the state. The 4th Congressional District includes the eastern half of the state, Douglas County, and Greeley.
Her decision to shift districts prompted criticism and responses from various quarters. Adam Frisch, her Democratic opponent in the 2022 election, announced plans to run for the 3rd District again, emphasizing the campaign’s ability to connect with voters. Frisch had out-raised Boebert significantly in the previous cycle.
Boebert’s move was labeled “cowardly” by Colorado Democratic Party Chair Shad Murib, accusing her of abandoning constituents. The Cook Political Report shifted its categorization of the 3rd District to “lean Republican” following her announcement.
Boebert’s decision stirred controversy, with critics questioning the strategic implications and accusing her of seeking a safer seat. The 4th District has been traditionally solidly Republican, but Boebert faces a crowded field in the primary election with several Republican candidates vying for the seat.
Boebert, known for her staunch conservative positions, asserted that her shift is aimed at preventing socialist and communist influence. The move adds a new dimension to the political landscape, setting the stage for an interesting and competitive 2024 election cycle.
