Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to five points with a 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Anfield, as reigning champions Manchester City slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Brighton. Under new manager Arne Slot, Liverpool has now won nine of their eleven Premier League games, marking a stunning early season performance that has many reconsidering their preseason expectations for the team.
Midfielder Alexis Mac Allister admitted the team wasn’t considered title contenders at the season’s start but said, “If we are top of the league by five points, it means something.” Slot, while excited by the progress, maintained caution. “It’s been a big week, but the season is long. Every match brings new challenges, and margins are small,” he noted.
Liverpool’s success was again evident on Saturday. Darwin Nunez opened the scoring in the 20th minute, capitalizing on a rebound after teammate Virgil van Dijk’s initial pass to Mohamed Salah was interrupted. Salah continued his impressive season, adding the second goal in the 84th minute and recording his 10th goal and 10th assist of the campaign.
Although Liverpool’s attack was potent, Villa’s defense put up a fight, with keeper Emiliano Martinez making notable saves and defender Lucas Digne struggling to contain Salah. Villa, missing key players due to injuries, seemed worn from recent fixtures, while Liverpool’s squad depth allowed them to maintain intensity.
City’s recent struggles, now with four consecutive losses, have only heightened Liverpool’s promising start under Slot. The Reds’ form, combined with the refreshed mix of experienced players like Van Dijk and Salah with emerging talents, has brought a renewed sense of optimism to Anfield. Fans are beginning to see Slot’s leadership as potentially historic, reminiscent of Liverpool’s iconic managerial transitions in the past.
As Arsenal, Chelsea, and other contenders deal with their own pressures and injuries, Liverpool’s growing momentum is drawing increasing attention as a title contender, even as Slot tempers expectations.
