Former Manchester City footballer Benjamin Mendy has won the majority of his employment tribunal claim against the club, securing compensation for withheld wages during his legal proceedings. Mendy, who was acquitted of all sexual offense charges after two trials, claimed the club had unlawfully withheld around £11 million in salary, including during the 16-month period following his re-arrest in 2021.
City had initially withheld Mendy’s £500,000 monthly wage, asserting he was “not presently ready and able to perform” his duties due to the allegations. However, Employment Judge Joanne Dunlop ruled that Mendy was “ready and willing” to work while out on bail, concluding he was owed the withheld wages, as the club had no contractual authorization to halt payments. The exact payout will either be negotiated or decided in a future hearing if an agreement cannot be reached.
Mendy expressed relief at the verdict, stating: “I am delighted with the decision… I sincerely hope the club will now do the honorable thing and pay the outstanding amounts.” He also acknowledged the support of former teammates, including Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez, who aided him financially during the wage freeze.
Following his acquittal, Mendy has returned to his native France, joining Ligue 2’s Lorient, and is focusing on rebuilding his career after a challenging three-year legal ordeal.
