Nigeria’s National Grid Suffers 10th Collapse of 2024, Restoration Efforts Underway Across Regions

On Tuesday afternoon, Nigeria experienced another blackout as the national grid suffered its 10th collapse of the year, plunging multiple regions into darkness. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed a partial grid disturbance at approximately 1:52 p.m., attributing the issue to a series of line and generator trips that destabilized the system. According to TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah, data from the National Control Centre revealed that some regions maintained power despite the widespread disruption.

Efforts to restore electricity have commenced, with power returning to parts of Abuja shortly after the incident. TCN has prioritized quick restoration to affected states and assured customers that updates will be provided as work progresses.

The power loss affected multiple electricity distribution companies, including Ikeja DisCo, Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, and Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, each of which informed their customers of ongoing restoration efforts. Many areas in both northern and southern Nigeria were impacted, with reports of outages in Lagos, Oyo, Kwara, Yobe, and regions across the Southeast, among others.

This recent collapse comes after a series of similar disruptions in October, highlighting ongoing challenges within the national power infrastructure. TCN and local distribution companies have apologized for the inconvenience, seeking patience as they collaborate to restore stable electricity across the nation.
