Dimeji Ajibola, the acclaimed Nigerian filmmaker known for directing the popular series Shanty Town, has passed away after battling an undisclosed illness. The news was shared on Sunday by fellow director Samuel Olatunji, who expressed his grief, describing Ajibola as both a client and a friend.
Ajibola’s contributions to the film industry were groundbreaking. As the CEO and Technical Director of Flipsyde Studios Ltd., he was a pioneer in merging traditional and digital storytelling. His body of work included Hoodrush—Nigeria’s first urban musical film—Slum King, Ovy’s Voice, and Wura, earning him numerous awards, such as Best Movie at the 2012 Green Me Film Festival in Germany, Best Actor and Soundtrack at the Nollywood Movies Awards, and Best Supporting Actor at the AMAA Awards.
Educated in filmmaking, animation, and visual effects at prestigious institutions like the New York Film Academy, Animation Mentor, and VFXLearning, Ajibola was celebrated as a visionary who advanced the frontiers of Nigerian cinema.
His passing adds to the recent list of Nollywood losses in 2024, which included Charles Oluomo (Agbako), Adejumoke Aderounmu, and several others. Ajibola leaves behind a rich legacy that continues to inspire filmmakers and audiences alike.
