In a thrilling upset, Bournemouth defeated Manchester City 2-1 on Saturday, halting City’s remarkable 32-game unbeaten streak in the Premier League. Goals from Antoine Semenyo and Evanilson secured a historic first-ever league victory over City for the Cherries, propelling them to eighth in the standings with 15 points.
Bournemouth made an aggressive start at the Vitality Stadium, and it paid off quickly. In the 9th minute, Milos Kerkez’s well-placed cross found Semenyo, who pivoted and fired past goalkeeper Ederson to put the hosts ahead. City, struggling to find their usual sharpness, went through the first half without a single shot on target as Bournemouth’s defense remained solid.
The pressure from Bournemouth continued in the second half. In the 64th minute, Kerkez provided another crucial assist, setting up Evanilson, who scored to double Bournemouth’s lead. Just minutes later, the Cherries nearly made it 3-0 when Marcus Tavernier hit the post, followed by Adam Smith’s miss from close range.
City eventually found a breakthrough in the 79th minute, with Josko Gvardiol’s header from an Ilkay Gundogan cross, narrowing Bournemouth’s lead. But even as the clock ticked down, City couldn’t find the equalizer. Erling Haaland came close with a last-minute attempt, hitting the post from point-blank range, sealing their first league loss since December 2023.
With Liverpool’s victory over Brighton, City dropped to second in the Premier League, trailing by two points. Bournemouth, meanwhile, celebrated a landmark victory that showcased their resilience and ambition under manager Andoni Iraola.
