Rohit Bal, one of India’s most iconic fashion designers, passed away at 63 due to cardiac arrest in Delhi after a prolonged illness. Known for his mastery in blending traditional Indian textiles with contemporary designs, Bal revolutionized Indian fashion and inspired generations of designers.
The Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), of which Bal was a founding member, shared the news on Friday, paying tribute to his “legacy of artistry and innovation.” Bal’s health had been fragile in recent months; he was briefly hospitalized in the ICU before making an emotional return to the runway in October at Lakme Fashion Week, where he showcased his latest collection, Kaaynaat: A Bloom in the Universe. The collection’s showstopper, Bollywood actor Ananya Panday, donned one of Bal’s signature ensembles, embodying his elegant yet bold aesthetic.
Born in Srinagar in 1961, Bal studied history at Delhi’s St. Stephen’s College before turning to fashion, eventually graduating from the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT). He launched his own label in 1990, gaining rapid acclaim for his opulent designs featuring lotus and peacock motifs on rich fabrics like velvet and brocade. Bal’s creations soon adorned international stars, including Uma Thurman, Cindy Crawford, and Naomi Campbell, bridging Indian heritage with global fashion.
Bal’s career saw numerous accolades, including Designer of the Year at the Indian Fashion Awards in 2006 and the Lakme Grand Finale Designer in 2012. His reach extended beyond fashion design, as he collaborated with brands to create everything from high-end home linens to jewelry and children’s wear. He also famously designed interiors for the upscale restaurant Veda in Delhi, showcasing his eye for luxurious detail.
The industry mourned his loss. “Rohit was a legend,” FDCI President Sunil Sethi said, announcing Bal’s cremation scheduled for Saturday. Gautam Singhania, Raymond Group Chairman, honored his friend’s legacy, sharing, “Rohit brought light and laughter to all around him, and his spirit will live on.” Journalist Vir Sanghvi added, “The world is a poorer place without him—a king among designers, a prince among men.”
Rohit Bal leaves behind a legacy that transcends fashion, with creations that celebrated Indian culture while appealing to global audiences. His timeless designs, fearless creativity, and immense influence will continue to inspire and shape Indian fashion for years to come.
