NAFDAC Issues Recall of Nivea Roll-On Deodorant Due to Harmful Chemical Risks

Nivea BLACK & WHITE invisible roll-on deodorant

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has alerted Nigerians to the recall of Nivea Black & White Invisible Roll-On Deodorant, 50ml, following a warning from the European Union’s Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products (RAPEX). The recalled product, produced in Germany, is labeled as providing “48-hour protection in African climates” and has batch number 93529610 and bar code 42299882.

NAFDAC’s warning comes in response to concerns over the deodorant’s content of 2-(4-tert-Butylbenzyl propionaldehyde), also known as BMHCA or Lilial, a chemical banned in cosmetics by the EU due to potential health risks. Studies have shown that BMHCA can negatively affect reproductive health, pose risks to unborn children, and cause skin irritation and burns.

NAFDAC advises importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers to avoid the affected batch of the product. Those in possession of this batch should stop using it and submit any remaining stock to the nearest NAFDAC office. The agency also urges healthcare professionals and consumers to report any adverse reactions associated with the product through NAFDAC’s E-reporting platforms or the Med-safety app.

BMHCA has been classified by the EU as a “Substance of Very High Concern” (SVHC) since March 2022. In recent years, companies have been reformulating products to comply with stricter safety regulations and increasing consumer awareness around safe ingredients.
